How I Overcame Depression with Mindfulness

During Mental Health Awareness Week, I feel compelled to share a personal journey that has shaped my perspective on mental health and led me to where I am today.

In this blog post, I will explore how mindfulness played a pivotal role in my battle with depression and how it can offer hope and peace to others facing similar struggles.

Acknowledging the Search for a Natural Solution:

For years, I grappled with depression, determined to find an alternative to medication. Witnessing my family's experiences with hospitalisation and medication without lasting results fueled my pursuit of a different path.

A Breakthrough with Mindfulness: In 2015,

I embarked on mindfulness training for health, which proved to be a life-changing decision. It allowed me to confront the deeply buried emotions I had been suppressing, leading to a significant breakthrough in my battle with depression.

Uncovering the Role of Secondary Suffering: Through mindfulness

I discovered that much of my suffering stemmed from worrying about feeling depressed and acting accordingly. This "secondary suffering" created a cycle of anticipation and withdrawal that intensified my struggles.

Understanding the Influence of Hormonal Cycles:

My journey also involved recognising the impact of my female hormonal cycle on my mental well-being. With the help of a pacing diary and the mindfulness for health course, I learned to differentiate between hormonal fluctuations and genuine depressive episodes.

Embracing My Emotions and the Beauty of Life

Mindfulness training allowed me to connect with my unresolved grief and fully experience a range of emotions. Today, I embrace life's highs and lows, appreciating the beauty that surrounds me more deeply than ever before.

When you block out the pain, you also block out joy, so being able to feel my feelings now is a gift.

My personal transformation through mindfulness has inspired me to share this powerful tool with others. While medication has its place, I believe in finding a balance between natural approaches and scientific advancements.

Mindfulness, supported by scientific research, offers hope for those who have exhausted other options and seek relief from chronic health conditions.

I share my story during Mental Health Awareness Week not as an expert or a quick fix advocate but to offer encouragement.

Overcoming depression is a journey that requires dedication and effort, but it is possible.

Let us remember that mental health matters and that we all have the capacity to find peace within ourselves.
